Ireland's Zimbabwe tour confirmed

Ireland's trip to Zimbabwe has been confirmed, and in addition to the
Intercontinental Cup match against Zimbabwe XI, three one-day internationals
between the senior national teams have been arranged. All of the games will
take place in Harare, with the four-day fixture starting on Monday September
20. The ODIs follow on September 26, 27 and 30.

Zimbabwe withdrew from Test cricket in 2006 and were subsequently admitted
to the Intercontinental Cup on the understanding that Zimbabwe XI's four
home games would be played at neutral venues. But along with the relative
political stability in the country, Zimbabwe Cricket has worked hard to
improve its structures after divisive squabbling between players and
administrators had wrecked cricket in the country.

There had been some speculation as to whether Ireland would make the trip at
all, and for a time there had been a possibility that the Intercontinental
Cup fixture would take place in South Africa. But both Kenya and Afghanistan
recently played their Intercontinental Cup matches in the country, and
Zimbabwe also hosted Sri Lanka and India in a one-day tri-series in June
this year, so the pressure on Ireland to make the trip was always going to
be immense. Now that their tour has been confirmed, it is almost certain
that Scotland - who are scheduled to play Zimbabwe XI in the middle of
October - will also make the trip.

Zimbabwe XI are currently in third place behind Afghanistan and Scotland in
the Intercontinental Cup having drawn against Afghanistan and beaten Kenya,
Netherlands and Canada. Ireland are fifth on the points table after draws
against Scotland and Kenya and a loss to Afghanistan at Dambulla.

Zimbabwe Football Association: Malaysia match was 'fixed'

ZIMBABWEAN football was thrown into turmoil last night after the Zimbabwe
Football Association admitted the national team "played a fixed match under
the auspices of a Malaysian betting syndicate" in December last year.
Zimbabwe, playing a second string team, lost to Malaysia 3-0 on December 28,
2009.

Suspended ZIFA CEO Henrietta Rushwaya has been summoned to a disciplinary
hearing on Tuesday morning after a probe committee led by ZIFA deputy
president Ndumiso Gumede accused her of corruption, financial mismanagement
and match fixing in a damning report.

In its findings, Gumede's committee said Rushwaya "facilitated (and) or
allowed the Zimbabwe national soccer team to travel to Malaysia on a trip
that had not been approved by either the ZIFA board or the Sport and
Recreation Commission."

Rushwaya will be asked to respond to charges that she "arranged a trip by
the national team to Malaysia where the team played a fixed match under the
auspices of a Malaysian betting syndicate."

The charge sheet adds: "The team was paid to lose the match, to the previous
prejudice to the reputation of Zimbabwe as a soccer playing nation and to
the FIFA ranking of the national team."

Rushwaya is also accused of facilitating another trip by Premier League club
Monomotapa to Malaysia in July 2009 where they passed themselves off as the
national team. They played two friendlies losing 4-0 and 1-0. Gumede's probe
team believes the match was also organised by a Malaysian betting syndicate.

After New Zimbabwe.com blew the lead on the deception, the Malaysian FA
accused ZIFA of "disgraceful conduct". Malaysian FA general secretary Datuk
Azzudin showed reporters a letter from Rushwaya which said Monomotapa -- who
played in the national colours -- were the national soccer team.

Further, Rushwaya is accused of applying for a loan of US$103,000 from the
Sport and Recreation Commission on ZIFA's behalf "without the authority of
the board".

"... to date, you have not accounted for the same money, neither have you
repaid it. The SRC has demanded this money from ZIFA," ZIFA says in a letter
to Rushwaya, detailing the charges against her.

ZIFA also accused Rushwaya of prejudicing it of large amounts of money after
signing a contract with a Swiss-based sports marketing agency, Kentaro,
giving it rights to all the proceeds from Zimbabwe's match against Brazil on
June 2 this year.

Zimbabwe lost the match played at the National Sports Stadium 3-0, and
Kentaro - who manage Brazil's international television rights - have now
demanded US$650,000 from ZIFA. The association says the money is NOT in its
coffers.

The ZIFA charge sheet says: "On or about May 26, 2010, you on behalf of
ZIFA, signed a contract with Kentaro A.G in terms of which ZIFA literally
gave everything away including rights as defined by Article 45 of the ZIFA
constitution and got nothing out of a soccer match that was eventually
played between the Zimbabwe national team and the Brazilian national team at
the National Sports Stadium.

"As a result of your action in binding the national association to this
one-sided agreement, Kentaro A.G is demanding from ZIFA, payment equivalent
to all the gate takings realised from the said match, money which the
national association did not receive in the first place."

Rushwaya has denied wrongdoing even as Malawian sports consultant Felix
Sapao claimed that she had attempted to engineer a meeting between him and
Wilson Raj Perumal, who works for a Singapore sports agency, to help fix
matches involving Malawi. Perumal has previously served a jail term for
match fixing.

Capello Names England Squad

Uncapped trio in England overhaul
England boss Fabio Capello has named the uncapped trio of Jack Wilshere, Kieran Gibbs and Bobby Zamora in his squad to face Hungary on Wednesday.
Goalkeepers Paul Robinson and Ben Foster replace David James and Robert Green as only 10 of the 23-man World Cup squad return for the friendly.
Theo Walcott and Adam Johnson are both recalled but Joe Cole misses out.
Strikers Jermain Defoe and Peter Crouch are dropped as Carlton Cole and Darren Bent come in for the match at Wembley.
Manchester United's Wes Brown, Phil Jagielka of Everton and Bolton's Gary Cahill bolster the defensive ranks as Capello looks to freshen up the national set-up following a disastrous World Cup campaign which saw England crash out in the last 16.
Arsenal have much to cheer from the new-look squad with Wilshere, Gibbs and Walcott all included.
Wilshere, who was born on New Year's Day 1992, will become the 10th youngest England international of all time if he plays some part against Hungary.
He became Arsenal's youngest league debutant two seasons ago and was only the fifth 16-year-old to feature in the Champions League.
Wilshere has won five under-21 caps and his half season on loan at Bolton last term did not go unnoticed by Capello, who expects him to mature rapidly.
After receiving the news, the 18-year-old told
"I'm delighted to have been named in the senior England squad for the first time. It is a real honour and I'm looking forward to the experience. "I'm also realistic and want to take things one step at a time. Being called up to the England squad is a proud moment for me and my family, but my first target is to break into the Arsenal team and play on a regular basis.
"To achieve that, I need to keep my head down, work hard and stay focused."

afcbigbear
Ashley Cole was one of the few to emerge from the South Africa campaign with their reputation intact, so Gibbs's contribution at left-back will probably be as back-up.
However, the Lambeth-born 20-year-old was already on Capello's radar last year and in may have made the World Cup squad ahead of Stephen Warnock had he not suffered a season-ending injury in November.
"It is a special moment to be called up to the first team squad," said Gibbs, who broke his foot in November.
"I have to say this a real boost for me as I spent over five months out through injury and this is a good opportunity to thank the surgeons and medical support I've received to get me back to full fitness.
"Naturally my top priority at this moment in time is to get back to the level I was at before my injury and get some games under my belt with Arsenal, but of course, I would love to cement a place in the England team in the future."
At 29, Zamora is not a youngster, but Capello was keen to include the Fulham star in his provisional World Cup squad, only for injury to rule out that option.
However, with Emile Heskey now retired and neither Crouch nor Defoe considered, Zamora was an obvious choice.
West Ham striker Cole has been around the squad before, as has Bent, although Gabriel Agbonlahor will probably consider himself unlucky.
There was better news for another Aston Villa player, however, as Ashley Young has been recalled, with neither Shaun Wright-Phillips nor Aaron Lennon being retained.
Most of Capello's senior men are included, with John Terry keeping his place, even if his partner in the centre of defence next week remains something of a mystery.
At various stages of the World Cup, Ledley King, Jamie Carragher and Matthew Upson had the job, but all three have now been ditched.
That hints at a straight fight between Jagielka, who won the last of his three caps against Ukraine at Wembley last year before suffering a serious knee injury, and Michael Dawson, who was called into the World Cup squad for injured skipper Rio Ferdinand but did not play a game.

England squad to face Hungary: Goalkeepers: Ben Foster (Birmingham), Joe Hart (Manchester City), Paul Robinson (Blackburn)
Defenders: Wes Brown (Manchester United), Gary Cahill (Bolton), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Michael Dawson (Tottenham Hotspur), Kieran Gibbs (Arsenal), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), John Terry (Chelsea)
Midfielders: Gareth Barry (Manchester City), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Adam Johnson (Manchester City), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), James Milner (Aston Villa), Ashley Young (Aston Villa), Theo Walcott (Arsenal), Jack Wilshere (Arsenal)
Forwards: Darren Bent (Sunderland), Carlton Cole (West Ham United), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Bobby Zamora (Fulham)
